On the recent Fintechfun podcast I caught up with Trent Daniel from Azupay. I have known Trent and the crew for a long time and have followed their journey closely. From the early experiments with PayID through to the recent partnership with NAB, it has been a story of focus, execution and staying true to what they do best.
Trent described Azupay as the “OGs of real time account to account payments” in Australia. Back when the New Payments Platform was still new, they were the first startup to build out real use cases for it. What began with government contracts has since grown into enterprise solutions now used by airlines, utilities, telcos and gaming platforms.
A big part of their success has been more than just APIs. As Trent explained, “We actually provide a full end to end user experience journey”. That might sound technical, but in practice it means merchants and their customers get a smoother, faster and more consistent way to pay or be paid. Speed to market has also been critical. Trent spoke about getting four airlines live in just eight weeks , something that is almost unheard of in financial services.
The NAB announcement was the clear highlight of our chat. “NAB realised that what Azupay could deliver was a fantastic product and solution,” Trent said. For Azupay, it is validation from one of the country’s biggest banks. For NAB customers, it is access to an innovative product that they might not have had otherwise. And for the market, it shows that enterprise grade fintech solutions can come from Australian startups with the right focus.
This partnership also creates a bridge. For companies that want the assurance of working through their bank while also tapping into fintech innovation, Azupay and NAB together provide that path. It signals a new level of maturity for real time payments and confirms that PayID, PayTo and disbursements are fast becoming expected parts of the enterprise payments stack.
This partnership with NAB is a clear marker of Azupay’s maturity. What started with Dynamic PayID and expanded into PayTo and disbursements is now validated at the highest level. Azupay has proven that enterprise grade fintech can be built and scaled from here in Australia.
