As 2024 draws to a close, I had spoke  with Ben Pullen, founder of Outposter, a company enabling startups and tech businesses to scale through offshore staffing solutions in the Philippines and beyond. This year was transformative for Outposter as it navigated industry challenges and celebrated key milestones.

A Post-COVID Marketplace Normalises

Reflecting on the year, Ben described 2024 as a time of stabilisation following the COVID-induced outsourcing surge. “There was a period of panic with labour shortages, but now businesses are pursuing more strategic and sustainable growth,” he explained. This normalisation set the stage for Outposter’s notable achievements, including expansion into North America and India, signalling their global ambitions.

Navigating Regulatory Changes

An industry feature was an Australian Fair Work ruling, which had a company deemed to be employing a worker overseas under Australian labour standards. Ben sees this as a positive development. “It formalises the engagement between companies and employees, ensuring stability and compliance,” he said. Outposter has adapted seamlessly, leveraging its established entities in the Philippines and India to navigate these regulatory waters.

The Talent Equation

Outposter’s approach to recruitment has been a cornerstone of its success. By partnering with educational institutions and focusing on long-term relationships, the company ensures access to a robust talent pipeline. “We’ve offered recruitment as a free service since day one, and that’s been a differentiator for us,” Ben noted. The integration of new graduates directly into roles has been a strategic win, setting the stage for 2025.

Embracing AI and Remote Work

Artificial intelligence has become a game-changer for the BPO industry, and Outposter is no exception. “AI has made us more productive and accurate. It’s an augmentation tool, not a replacement,” Ben emphasised. The company has also doubled down on its remote-first model, with investments in infrastructure ensuring seamless operations despite the challenges of typhoons and power outages.

A Global Perspective

Celebrating the year’s achievements, Outposter hosted its end-of-year party in Manila, bringing together staff from across the Philippines. This underscores the company’s commitment to fostering a vibrant, connected culture despite being fully remote. Direct flights from Brisbane to Manila have also made it easier for Australian clients to engage with their offshore teams, strengthening these critical relationships.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As Outposter gears up for 2025, Ben is optimistic. The company plans to deepen its presence in North America, expand its Indian operations, and continue building on its success in the Philippines. His advice for companies considering outsourcing? “Hire slowly and train well. Building brick by brick ensures long-term success.”

Outposter and the Podcast Journey

This year also saw Outposter embracing storytelling through podcasts, including the one I hosted with Ben. These conversations highlight the strategic and human elements of the outsourcing industry, offering valuable insights for businesses navigating offshore talent.

Ben’s reflections underline a year of adaptability, innovation, and growth for Outposter. As the company looks to the future, it remains a testament to the potential of strategic outsourcing in transforming businesses worldwide.
