As the host of Scoreboard podcast, my goal is to uncover the personal stories behind athletes’ lives, delving into their mindsets, career choices, and the values that define success beyond their sports. Each guest brings something unique to the conversation, and Jesse Williams, former NFL defensive tackle and Brisbane native, is no exception on the Scoreboard podcast.
When Jesse joined me on the podcast, he reflected on his remarkable journey—from a basketball-loving teenager in Queensland to a national champion with the University of Alabama, and ultimately, a Super Bowl-winning professional football player. His story is one of grit, resilience, and unwavering focus, punctuated by a steadfast belief in learning from every experience. His interview on the Scoreboard podcast was indeed like no other.
From Brisbane to Alabama
Jesse’s journey began unexpectedly. “I was playing basketball and eventually got encouraged to try American football,” he said. That encouragement sparked a love for the game, though it wasn’t an easy road. With limited opportunities in Australia, Jesse worked three jobs to save enough money to head to the United States for a shot at playing college football. His gamble paid off when he earned a spot at Arizona Western College.
Excelling at Arizona, Jesse’s performance caught the attention of scouts nationwide, garnering more than 60 Division I scholarship offers. “Choosing Alabama was a hard decision,” Jesse admitted. “I could’ve gone somewhere smaller and been the star, but I wanted the challenge of competing at the highest level.” That decision set him on a course to play for Nick Saban, one of college football’s most revered coaches, and contribute to Alabama’s dominance on the national stage.
At Alabama, Jesse honed his craft while pursuing dual degrees. “In the U.S., they take the ‘student’ part of ‘student-athlete’ seriously,” he explained. “If your GPA isn’t high enough, you don’t play. That discipline helped me prepare for life beyond football.” He became a two-time national champion and earned recognition as an All-American, cementing his place in the history of one of the most storied programs in college football.
The NFL and Life’s Challenges
Jesse’s talent and work ethic led to the NFL, where he was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 2013. The transition to the professional level was challenging, but Jesse embraced it with the same determination that had carried him from Brisbane to Alabama. “I didn’t think about fame or money,” he said. “For me, it was about working hard every day and contributing to the team.”
However, Jesse’s NFL journey wasn’t without setbacks. Injuries took a toll, and he faced a life-threatening battle with cancer during his playing days. Through it all, Jesse remained resilient. “Adversity has always been part of my life,” he said. “You don’t get to choose your challenges, but you do get to choose how you respond to them.” His perspective adds depth to his character on the Scoreboard podcast.
One of the highlights of Jesse’s career was being part of the Seahawks’ Super Bowl-winning team. “I remember standing on the field and thinking about where I came from—those empty fields in Brisbane,” he said. “It was surreal to be on the world’s biggest stage.”
Beyond Football
Since retiring, Jesse has shifted his focus to mentoring young athletes and helping them navigate their own journeys. “I try to be the man I needed when I was 15 or 16,” he shared. Whether coaching football or speaking at events, he emphasises the importance of preparation, values, and seizing opportunities. “When you get an opportunity, you have to snatch it and fight for it like your life depends on it.”
Jesse also finds fulfillment in creative pursuits like photography, which he began during his college years. “I wanted to document my life, not for me, but for my kids,” he explained. His photos capture moments that tell a story of resilience and growth—a theme that runs through every aspect of his life, a theme also evident during his discussion on the Scoreboard podcast.
A Legacy in Progress
As Jesse looks ahead, his focus is on giving back. “I want to help more young Australian athletes make it to the U.S.,” he said. “It’s about building a pipeline of opportunities.” His vision includes mentoring programs, coaching initiatives, and even plans to return to the U.S. full-time to further these efforts.
Jesse also speaks passionately about values. “In today’s world, values are more important than ever,” he said. “It’s not about preaching them; it’s about living them every day. That’s what I want my kids to see and carry forward.”
Reflections
Episodes like this remind me why I created Scoreboard. Each conversation reveals not only the struggles and triumphs of athletes but also the universal lessons they’ve learned along the way. Jesse’s story underscores themes that resonate far beyond the world of sports: resilience, the power of preparation, and the importance of staying true to your values. Jesse Williams’ appearance on the Scoreboard podcast captures these lessons.
As Jesse aptly put it, “Football was a part of my life, but it doesn’t define me. It was a catalyst for everything else.” That sentiment captures the spirit of Scoreboard—a podcast about defining success on your own terms, both in and out of the arena.
Stay tuned for more stories that inspire and challenge the way we think about success, resilience, and life beyond the game. Listen to the Scoreboard podcast for more insightful interviews like the one with Jesse Williams.
