This week I had the chatted with Jarryd Lyons, whose career is a case study in resilience and consistency on the Scoreboard podcast. We talked extensively about his journey on the Jarryd Lyons ; Scoreboard podcast.
Jarryd’s path in the AFL wasn’t straightforward—he started as a late draft pick. Yet, through hard work and relentless dedication, he built a 14-year career. In a fiercely competitive industry where careers are often short, Jarryd’s tenure speaks volumes about his determination and ability to overcome challenges.
A Cricketer’s Mindset in the AFL
Jarryd’s approach to football reflects his roots in another game: cricket.
Growing up, Cricket was Jarryd’s first love. He spoke passionately about his days as a wicketkeeper, where he developed the skills of quick thinking and one-touch handling. His instinctual ability to read the game is something he’s carried with him into AFL. “If I’d been fast or had that elite endurance, I’d probably still be playing AFL,” he joked on the Jarryd Lyons ; Scoreboard podcast. But what he lacked in speed, he made up for with his football brain, which he honed by studying every play and anticipating moves with an almost chess-like precision.
Facing Adversity Head-On
Resilience has been a constant in Jarryd’s career, both on and off the field. Early in his journey, he faced an unusual setback—a spider bite that led to a severe infection, putting him in the hospital. It was a bizarre incident, but Jarryd didn’t let it derail him. He saw it as another challenge to overcome, embodying his “never say die” attitude. That same spirit helped him through injuries and the relentless pressure to perform, especially as he took on a key role with the Brisbane Lions.

It was a bizarre setback, but Jarryd didn’t let it throw him off course. He treated it as just another challenge to overcome, a testament to his “never say die” attitude. That same spirit carried him through injuries and the constant pressure of needing to perform, especially as he matured into a pivotal role at the Lions.
Humility and Team Spirit
One of Jarryd’s standout qualities is his humility, a trait he brings both to his game and his life. He remembers the hard work it took to succeed and values his role as a mentor. Drawing inspiration from Shane Warne, Jarryd has always made time for young fans, staying behind to sign autographs or chat. This down-to-earth attitude has endeared him to those around him and underscores his respect for the team spirit that drives AFL.

Jarryd credits cricket for teaching him the value of camaraderie. He fondly recalls friends like Peter Handscomb and Ashton Agar, who went on to represent Australia. Watching their success fills him with pride and reminds him of the bonds that sports create among players. Now, in retirement, Jarryd reconnects with old mates—a refreshing shift from the isolated bubble of elite sports.
Bonds Beyond the Game
Authenticity defines Jarryd’s approach to life, making him a favourite among fans. On the Scoreboard podcast, he shared his plans to stay close to sports, possibly through coaching or supporting young athletes. He’s also excited to spend more time with his family, move back to Adelaide, and explore business ventures that combine his love for sports with his desire to help others.
In all, my conversation with Jarryd Lyons wasn’t just a reflection on his impressive career. It was a look at the resilience, humility, and authenticity that have shaped his life, both on and off the field.
