To read

In this week’s episode of Scoreboard, I had a conversation with Paul Roos, an AFL Hall of Fame inductee.

We delved into his career, discussing his journey from a young athlete to an AFL coach, and the key lessons he learned along the way. Paul Roos’ insights into resilience, teamwork, and leadership provided a well-rounded perspective on the realities of professional sports.

The connection to sport

Paul’s early connection to sport was rooted in community, valuing social bonds and shared competition over professional aspirations.

Interestingly, Paul noted that basketball was his first sporting love, with football becoming a primary focus only after he was invited to join the Fitzroy Football Club. This early connection to basketball and tennis, he explained, helped shape his strategic thinking on the football field. A central theme in our discussion was resilience. Paul emphasised how sport teaches resilience through wins, losses, and setbacks like injuries and off-field challenges. His time at Fitzroy, in particular, underscored this lesson. The club faced significant financial struggles during his tenure, with players not getting paid on time. Despite these challenges, Paul Roos emphasised that the expectation to keep showing up and performing remained the same. This experience taught him valuable lessons in perseverance and adaptability, lessons that he carried throughout his career as both a player and a coach.

Career Highlights

When discussing his playing career, Paul reflected on his approach to self-awareness and skill development. Paul credits his success to self-awareness, maximizing strengths like endurance and game sense over raw athleticism—a vital trait for athletes.

Our conversation also touched on the importance of process over goals in his coaching career. During his time coaching the Sydney Swans, Paul Roos stressed the need for daily consistency and building habits rather than focusing solely on winning a premiership. This approach, he said, alleviates pressure and encourages incremental improvement. It was a strategy that paid off, leading the Swans to their 2005 premiership—a significant achievement both for the club and for the growth of AFL.

The National Game

Speaking of growth for the game nationally,  Paul also commented on the Brisbane Lions’ recent 2024 AFL premiership win. He praised the Lions for their resilience throughout the season, particularly given their early struggles and start to the year. Paul Roos emphasised focusing on the process in practice and games, not future outcomes, as key to their success.

Paul has since transitioned from AFL to leadership development, applying the same principles from his sporting career to the corporate world. He now works with Performance by Design, helping businesses build high-performing teams by focusing on culture, communication, and accountability. The parallels between building successful sports teams and successful businesses are clear—both require a strong process, open communication, and the ability to adapt in the face of challenges.

The episode highlights resilience, self-awareness, and process-driven success in sports, offering valuable lessons for improvement in any field.

I look forward to the next guest on Scoreboard – The Podcast to inspire and learn about athletes past and present.
