In my recent Scoreboard podcast, I had the chance to sit down with Dale Morris, a name familiar to anyone who follows AFL and respects the tenacity of the game. Dale’s story is as compelling off the field as it is on, stretching from his days at the Bulldogs to his recent transition into coaching with the Brisbane Lions. His journey is one of resilience, tactical insight, and a relentless pursuit of improvement—qualities that have shaped both his playing career and his approach as a coach.
2024 – Sliding Doors
2024 has been a whirlwind for Dale as he’s stepped fully into his new role with the Lions, which he discussed on the Scoreboard podcast. Joining Brisbane wasn’t part of his original plan, and it certainly didn’t come without a shift in loyalty. After a lifetime with the Bulldogs, where he played 253 games and won a premiership, Morris had to adjust to a new club culture. But he quickly found that the Lions had a spirit that reminded him of the early Bulldogs teams he grew up with—passionate, driven, and deeply supportive. In a recent Scoreboard podcast episode, Dale Morris shared his thoughts on this transition.

That Tackle
Of course, no discussion with Dale could overlook the iconic moment of his career: the tackle on Buddy Franklin in the final moments of the 2016 Grand Final. Dale walked me through the play with the mind of a strategist. Recognising Franklin’s tendency to go for a double-grab on overhead marks, he saw his chance to disrupt just enough to deny Franklin possession, and when Franklin tried to break through again, Dale closed in for the game-saving tackle. In my opinion, that moment wasn’t luck; it was the product of meticulous preparation and years of hard-fought lessons – not to mention an AFL career 653 tackles.
Pathway to AFL
Dale’s path to the AFL was no straight line. He faced rejection at almost every turn, and it was only through sheer persistence that he broke through to the professional level. As he described it, each setback taught him resilience. When he didn’t make the cut, he returned to his local club and worked harder, refusing to let anyone define his limits. For four years, he juggled his aspirations with odd jobs, family support, and relentless practice, sending videotapes to clubs and attending pre-season trials until he finally earned his spot with the Bulldogs. Those experiences built his strength of character—one that has become the foundation of his coaching style today. Dale shared this and more about his journey on the Scoreboard podcast session.
The Lions and beyond
Moving beyond his personal achievements, Dale is now focused on the Lions’ future. The club recently enjoyed a strong season, and while some might see that as a single triumph, Dale sees it as the beginning of something much bigger. “You want to create something special—a dynasty, if you can,” he told me on the Scoreboard podcast. He knows that with success comes added pressure; Brisbane is no longer the underdog. But he’s pushing his players to embrace that challenge, drawing from his own experiences after the Bulldogs’ 2016 win, where he witnessed firsthand the shift from being the hunter to the hunted.
For Dale, success isn’t about a single victory; it’s about consistently raising the bar. Throughout our chat on the Scoreboard podcast, Dale emphasised the importance of preparation—not just physically but mentally. During his playing days, he practised visualisation techniques before every game, picturing himself in key moments and preparing for all scenarios. This approach gave him a calmness that offset the chaos on the field. It’s a mindset he’s now instilling in the Lions, helping them not only to react in the heat of play but to own their performance with confidence. Scoreboard podcast has truly become a platform for these insightful discussions.
As we wrapped up the Scoreboard podcast, Dale reflected on his family and the sacrifices they made during his playing career. Moving to Brisbane wasn’t just a career move; it was about giving back to his family after years of footy’s demanding schedule. In this new chapter, he’s striving for balance, bringing his love for the game into his family life while sharing his journey with the next generation of players.
Being Humble
For Dale Morris, the endgame has never been a trophy or personal acclaim. It’s about crafting a legacy defined by resilience, a commitment to growth, and a willingness to take on every challenge headfirst. In a feature on the Scoreboard podcast, Dale Morris discussed how he perceives his own journey and the milestones along the way.
This interview captured what it means to push through limits, redefine success, and pursue excellence—qualities that have made Dale an athlete in addition to being a coach and a down-to-earth human being.
